Triathlon taught me much more than I expected.
Between challenges, overcoming
obstacles, and a few surprises, I learned lessons that went beyond the
sport. From how to deal with fatigue to finding motivation in the toughest
moments, I’ll share 8 things that took my life to the next level.
No matter how much we plan, some things
are simply out of our control.
Unexpected events can arise even with the best planning. The weather can
change suddenly, equipment can fail, or the body may simply not respond as
expected. The secret is to accept that some variables are beyond our control
and learn to deal with them without losing focus. This mental flexibility is
essential for growth and for dealing with challenges in a balanced way.
Maintain the balanced tripod: training, nutrition,
and rest.
Training hard is important, but without proper nutrition and adequate
rest, the body cannot withstand the demands of triathlon. This tripod is the
foundation of any athlete; neglecting any of these areas can compromise
performance. Maintaining a balance between training, eating well, and resting
is what sustains performance and helps prevent injuries.
Celebrate the little things.
Every small victory is a win. A pain-free training day, a pleasant
conversation, a good night's sleep, or simply a day without setbacks. Recognizing
and celebrating these daily victories creates a sense of gratitude and
satisfaction that helps us maintain enthusiasm and strength to face greater
challenges. After all, true happiness lies not only in great achievements but
also in the details that enrich our daily lives.
There are things you can only do at a certain age.
Over time, we realize that some challenges require the energy and
resilience of youth, while others become more accessible with maturity.
Recognizing this allows each phase of life to be enjoyed to the fullest,
without excess or unnecessary demands. Adjusting expectations helps to avoid
frustration and appreciate every moment.
Have an anchor habit.
When triathlon becomes the anchor habit, it begins to guide and shape
your routine. Training times, diet, and even sleep times begin to organize
around this central practice. This commitment to the sport creates a solid
structure that facilitates discipline and maintains focus, helping to align
other areas of life. Triathlon, therefore, ceases to be just a physical
activity to become a foundation, influencing choices and priorities, and
promoting a more balanced and healthy life.
When we are too focused on something, we end up
depriving ourselves of others.
Intensely dedicating oneself to a goal can be positive, but it is easy
to fall into the trap of hyperfocus, where balance is lost and other important
areas of life end up being neglected. Lack of focus prevents us from achieving
our goals, but hyperfocus limits us, blinding us to experiences and
relationships that also have value. The ideal is to seek a balanced focus, one
that allows you to give your best to a goal without losing connection with the
rest of life. In this way, we can grow in a more complete way, without giving
up what truly matters.
Endurance is an eternal battle with your mind.
Endurance training pushes the body to its limits, but the biggest battle
takes place in the mind. Dealing with pain, fatigue, and thoughts of giving up
is part of the process. Maintaining focus and finding ways to stay motivated
are essential to continue and overcome these moments. Learning to master the
mind and stay positive are skills as important as physical training.
Enjoy the process.
The real value of any journey lies in the path, not just the finish
line. Instead of focusing solely on the outcome, learning to appreciate each
stage - with its challenges, advances, and even setbacks - teaches us to grow
and connect with the present. Enjoying the process helps us find satisfaction
in every workout, in every moment of overcoming, and even on difficult days,
because that's where the deepest lessons are revealed. When we value the
process, the journey ceases to be a means to an end and becomes a rich
experience, full of discoveries and learnings, which make the final goal even
more worthwhile. In the end, triathlon is not just about reaching a goal, but
about appreciating every step of the way.
Each experience in triathlon is unique, and every
athlete lives the sport in their own way, with their own challenges, victories,
and lessons. What I’m sharing here is my journey, what I’ve lived and learned
over the years of training, effort, and perseverance. Others may find their own
lessons or approaches, but for me, what triathlon has taught me goes beyond the
physical. It’s about persisting, adjusting strategies, and learning to listen
to both the body and the mind, while always striving for the best version of
yourself. This is my experience, but somehow, I believe it resonates with many
who commit to the sport.
WHAT AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!! These ara valuable lessons that can be applied far beyond the sport, for sure ✨️🫶
